The Truth About Race From Sociology
Blog By: Monique Stallings
I would like to start off that I have been debating the terms of black, white, yellow, and brown race ever since I left Louisiana. I would have people ask me where was I from when I was in the military and I would address them by saying, I am Creole, but I am black because I am from Louisiana, and a lot of people would state that they could see that I had other DNA besides being “black”.
Now, I want to go fast forward when I moved to Dallas, I would get the same questions asked of me and I would tell them the same thing. Moreover, I began having people say, “oh you’re from Louisiana and your Cajun,” I then would have to explain the complete story that was given too me by my mother along with my family members about the history of Creoles. Now, the answers I would get would be, “wow”, I did not know this, but I also realized that the Cajun culture was widely spread; however, things have changed because we are speaking more and more about our culture combined with the internet, which makes it easily to understand our history and culture.
Adding on, One day I was working for the title company when there was an African man who came to close, and I notice that he was acting funny towards me by stating he did not want me to give him any answers because he wanted to speak with the Escrow Officer who was an Anglo, and by the way I was the Escrow Assistant. Well moving forward, I then ask the Escrow Officer what his issue was, then she began to tell me that he did not like talking to Black people because he felt that he was superior too me. I was thrown back as well as, I also got mad and said to myself, who does he think he is. Nevertheless, this was the very day that I told myself that I would never call myself black, African American, Afro American, and so on because I realized that he realized that the so called “Black” race was not so black. He also gave me a clear understanding that this is why my mother continued too tell me I was a Creole. Indeed, I continued to speak to other Africans, and they all felt the same way about people who want to call themselves “Black” or “African American.” Therefore, I will not put my ethnicity on any form if they do not let me check off all my ‘tribes.
NOW, I WILL GIVE EVERYONE WHO CALLS THEIR SELF “BLACK” OR “THE BLACK RACE” THIS WAS FORMED IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES BY JOHANN FRIEDRICH BLUMENBACH’S WHO DECIDED SHE WOULD CLASSIFY RACES AND THIS WAS PROPOSED IN 1779 AND WAS WIDELY USED IN THE 19TH CENTURY, VARIATIONS. (Wikipedia, 2019) THE FOLLOWING WAS LISTED:
THE ETHIOPIAN/BLACK RACE
THE CAUCASIAN RACE/WHITE RACE
THE MONGOLIAN/YELLOW RACE
THE AMERICAN/RED RACE
THE MALAYAN/BROWN RACE
GUYS, I AM NOT MAKING ANY OF THIS UP. ONCE AGAIN, THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO CONTINUE TO WANT TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE OF WHO WE ARE. I AM ASKING EVERYONE TO BECOME UNPROGRAMED AS TO ALL YOU WERE TAUGHT. AND THIS IS WHY WE THE CREOLES REFUSED TO GIVE UP OUR IDENITY AS TOO WHO WE ARE AND OUR HERITAGE BECAUSE TRUST ME THEY TRY TO TAKE IT AWAY FROM THE CULTURE.
